He was one of the best on German soccer fields: Knut Kircher, Bundesliga referee and former FIFA referee, enjoys great reputation for his achievements both among officials and players. His first international match was the World Cup qualifying game between Andorra and Romania. His career high as a referee was leading the final game of the DFB-Pokal between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern München in 2008. Thanks to his sporting achievements Knut Kircher was nominated as Referee of the Year in 2012 by the DFB referee commission. By the end of season 2015/16 he reached the age limit set by the DFB for Bundesliga referees.
